The moving date is fixed, notice has gone in, and now comes the practical question of how the furniture gets from the old flat to the new one. If you have not moved within Switzerland before, two things usually catch people out. First, an Umzug (move) here does not simply mean loading a van. Landlords in canton Zurich only accept notice on three fixed dates a year, 31 March, 30 June and 30 September, which is why removal vans, lifts and street permits are all booked solid around those weeks. In March SZ almost any month end except 31 December works, so the calendar is far less crowded.

Second, moving on public roads in Switzerland is not a free-for-all. Many Zurich-area municipalities require a paid permit to reserve a loading zone or no-parking stretch outside your building, often with two weeks’ notice, and the requirements differ from one commune to the next. Whether you are leaving a studio on the third floor without a lift or a family flat in a high-rise in Pfäffikon SZ, we plan the move around floor, lift and access rather than treating every address the same. Every job starts with a site visit and ends with a fixed price that holds even if the corridor turns out to be longer or the staircase narrower than expected.

What happens on moving day

Before the date is confirmed, we look at the flat, count rooms, furniture and boxes, and work out access, lift availability and parking. Where a reserved bay on public ground needs a written permit, we apply early rather than discovering the deadline the week before. Wald ZH, for instance, expects the application at least fourteen days ahead and charges a fee for the reservation, on top of a monthly charge if the bay is needed for longer. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a moving day starts late.

On the day itself we protect the stairwell, lift, door frames and handrails with blankets, corner guards and floor film before anything is carried down. Beds, wardrobes and shelving are dismantled on site, secured in the vehicle and reassembled at the new address. Appliances such as washing machines and fridges are secured before transport so the drum or door cannot swing during the drive. If the old flat also needs a move-out clean for the handover inspection (Wohnungsabgabe), we cover that through the linked move-out cleaning service, so both dates are booked from the same conversation.

Where moves typically go wrong

Most problems start before anyone lifts a box. An unbooked lift in a high-rise like those common in Pfäffikon SZ can stall the entire schedule, because other residents need the same lift at the same time. A van with no reserved loading zone ends up parked two streets away, and every box then makes a longer round trip on foot. A narrow stairwell with a tight bend on the first floor needs a different carrying technique than a straight run, or a chest of drawers ends up against the wall. In protected historic centres such as the Stedtli in Grüningen, or in the older parts of Siebnen, there is a third complication: the access road itself is narrow, and the van often has to park further away than it would in a newer neighbourhood.

We settle the lift, the parking and the stairwell before moving day, not on the morning itself. If you are moving on one of the three annual dates in the Zürcher Oberland, expect tradespeople, other removal firms and the managing agent to be equally busy on the same day. Confirming early buys more room to manoeuvre there than it does in March SZ, where demand is spread across the whole year.
