Cleaning windows yourself sounds simple until the first streak appears on glass that looked wet and clean a minute earlier. The wrong cloth, or working in direct sun, leaves more marks than there were to begin with. With the right technique and tools it goes faster and actually stays streak-free.
What window cleaning covers
We clean glass inside and out, along with frames, the track and sills, where dust and insect residue settle in over time. The external blind box, known in Switzerland as the Storen box, is cleaned as part of the job because leaves and cobwebs collect there in a spot barely visible from ground level. We check handles and hinges at the same time so the window still closes easily once it is clean. For windows without easy access, upper floors with no balcony for instance, we use telescopic poles and specialist cleaning systems rather than putting a ladder somewhere unsafe.
Where it commonly goes wrong
The most common mistake is doing things in the wrong order. Wiping the frame before the glass just redeposits dust back onto the surface you already cleaned. Hard water is a second issue. Limescale in tap water leaves fine marks as it dries, and only the right finishing technique with a clean squeegee avoids that. Time of day matters too. In direct sun the cleaning solution dries before it can be wiped off properly, so we work mornings or overcast days where possible. And then there is the blind box: skip it while cleaning the window and it keeps shedding debris onto the sill every time the blind moves.
Orientation of the building affects how often a window genuinely needs attention. South-facing glass, exposed to more sun and rain, shows limescale and water marks far faster than a shaded north-facing window. Double or triple glazing is also more sensitive to aggressive cleaning products than older single glazing, which is why we use gentle but effective products on modern windows. Frosted or textured bathroom glass gets handled differently again, since streaks show up differently on a textured surface and it needs more care when wiping dry.

That also keeps costs down, since travel and setup only need to happen once instead of repeatedly.

How often should windows realistically be cleaned professionally?
Most flats and houses are fine with two rounds a year, typically spring and autumn. Homes on a busy road or near farmland tend to need three or four rounds because grime builds up faster there.
What is a Storen box and why does it matter for window cleaning?
Storen is the Swiss term for external roller blinds, and the box that houses them sits directly above the window. Dust and leaves collect inside it over time, and every time the blind is raised or lowered that debris falls straight onto a freshly cleaned sill, so leaving the box out of a clean defeats the point.
What do you do with windows that cannot be reached from outside?
For upper-floor windows without balcony access we use telescopic poles and purified-water cleaning systems that reach the glass cleanly without a ladder against an unsafe wall.
Why do limescale marks reappear on the glass so quickly?
Limescale marks usually come from hard water drying on the surface, or from a nearby irrigation system. The right technique for wiping the glass afterwards reduces this noticeably, though it rarely disappears completely in hard-water areas.
Is there weather you simply will not clean windows in?
In direct strong sunlight the cleaning solution dries too fast and leaves streaks, so we schedule those jobs for the morning or for overcast days wherever the calendar allows.
